Naoko Tachibana is a photographer and professional ‘josou’ specialist who has helped over 1,000 men to try out crossdressing, giving styling and fashion advice as well as shooting stunning photos of the completed transformation. And josou itself – male to female crossdressing – is the theme of a new solo exhibition of Tachibana’s photographic work, which opens at the Vanilla Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo this month.

Join us after the jump for a peek at the promotional shots for the exhibition, featuring Ladybeard and more!

The retrospective exhibition will feature Tachibana’s work from her very first ventures into photography six years ago, tracing her changing perspective on identity and beauty, as she asks questions such as: “What is josou? What is gender?…What is the shape of happiness?”

And in a special gallery talk on Sunday, January 31, Tachibana will be joined by some of the famous faces whose pictures feature in the exhibition – namely, Aoi Kamo of idol group Hajirai Rescue, and all-time RocketNews24 hero Ladybeard.

▼ Aoi Kamo, aka Ao-nyan.

▼ It may not be quite in the same vein, but this iconic photo of bearded crossdresser Ladybeard will also be on show.

In continuing her work documenting the lives of crossdressing men, Tachibana says she aims to help people escape from fixed notions of gender roles, and hopes that with increased awareness, more people can find happiness and freedom. Sounds good to us!

The gallery talk is 2,000 yen (including one drink), but the exhibition itself is only 500 yen. If you’re in Tokyo at the end of this month, make sure to check it out!

Cute girl or cool chap? We like both! Besides, they’re the same person anyway!【Photos】

There’s this urban legend about pictures of cute girls online which claims that “if she’s too cute, she must be a guy”. Well, after seeing so many mesmerizing cross-dressers, we can’t help but feel the same way at times. If that’s the case, then, it should be only fair to say that “if he’s too suave, he must be a girl”. Because, you know, all that stuff about equality… but mostly, these Chinese and Korean girls who look stunning dressed as guys.

Joining the list is Japanese Twitter user, RiM, who looks idol-material both as a guy or as a girl!

▼ Left or right, which is the “real” RiM?

If you guessed that RiM (@rimmr_) is a guy who cross-dresses as a girl… hard luck, no cookies for you this time. But don’t worry, you are definitely not alone, because we too, thought that RiM was a (very) pretty boy (just for a fleeting moment, really) when we first saw her pictures. Just look at her suave cross-dressing shots!

We can hear some fangirls squealing now. Here’s the icing on the cake: RiM, who is currently a high school student, looks just as cute if not cuter, as her feminine self!

We’re guessing that the majority of RiM’s 14,800 followers on Twitter are girls who were attracted by her handsome cross-dressing photos, but she does post non-cross-dressing photos of herself as well, so we wouldn’t be surprised if she has quite the number of fanboys too. Follow RiM on Twitter to see more of her ever-changing looks!

Chinese man dresses up as woman to spy in bathrooms, has no idea what women look like

peeping tom top

It’s getting harder and harder to be a Peeping Tom. With anti-chikan policies and people becoming more vigilant at younger ages, they have to get creative if they’re going to get their illegal jollies.

But sometimes it’s possible to get a little too creative. One man in China dressed up as a woman so he could sneak peeks in women’s restrooms. But based on the costume he chose, it’s not entirely clear if he’s ever actually seen a woman before in his life.

The incident occurred at Tengzhou City in Shandong Province, eastern China. Someone called the police reporting “a strange ‘woman’ who was inside local library’s toilet in very strange clothes and looking at others in a small mirror.”

The police responded, entering the women’s restroom and catching the dressed-up man in the act. This, it is reported, is who they found:

▼ Well, I mean, that’s certainly a little off but not so bad for a-

peeping tom 01

▼ All right, I spoke too soon. He probably based his costume on the horrible angles of women he’s spied on in his mirror.

peeping tom 02

According to police reports, the suspect was wearing “thick makeup, a pearl necklace, long, white gloves, and red high heels.” He was taken to the police station where he admitted to spying on women in the bathroom not only this most recent time, but also several other times during the past five months.

Japanese netizens had a lot to comment on this, with many admitting to being impressed by the man despite the vulgar nature of his crime:

“His costume actually isn’t bad. If he’d been a bit more modest with the chest, it might’ve worked.”
“Yeah, but instead he ended up as the definition of trying too hard.”
“He tried so hard he came back around full circle.”
“What’s under the shirt anyway? Actual watermelons?”
“It’s like he just pieced together things that he’s seen on different women before.”
“I’m impressed, China. I would’ve expected this level of mania from Japan only.”
“The perfect embodiment of a pervert. We salute you!”

Well, at least we’ve come out of this having learned something: bonding over peeping in bathrooms is the solution to international conflicts in Asia. Who knew?

Perhaps you’re getting ready to cosplay as your favorite opposite-gendered character or you’re on your way to one of the dedicated crossdressing bars in Tokyo or Osaka. Maybe you just want to experience what it feels like to dress as a member of the opposite sex. Whatever your reasons for wanting to make a few cosmetic changes, there’s a beauty salon in Tokyo that would be more than happy to help you out, and promises to give you the full cross-dressing treatment you require.

Total Beauty Salon ZOOM in Tokyo’s Ebisu district has become a popular place for all kinds of gender-bending makeovers. Whether you identify as male and are looking to transform into a female for a short time or vice-versa, ZOOM has got you covered.

The salon’s official website proudly proclaims that it’s “the salon where you can meet the ‘you’ that you dreamed of,” and offers a description of two of its most popular services: transforming its clients into ririjo (リリジョ) and ririmen (リリメン). Both of these are currently buzzwords among young Japanese people; as portmanteaus of the English word “release,” the Japanese morpheme for female (jo), and the English word “men,” these words evoke a greater sense of freedom than the typical terms used for cross-dressing in Japanese.

In addition, ZOOM Salon’s YouTube channel features dozens of promotional videos showcasing the ‘transformation sequences’ of several male and female clients in the form of one-minute time-lapse videos. Check out both of the sample videos below for an intimate look at one of the beauticians working her magic:

Every once in a while, we touch upon the topic of crossdressing, and more often than not, the attention is placed on men crossdressing as women. Iconic male crossdressers such as Ladybeard and the “Sailor Suit Old Man” have been steadily gaining popularity, but at the same time, women who crossdress as men have also been bringing a new breeze into the entertainment scene in Japan.

Female crossdressing model Root has been the talk of the town in recent months, capturing the hearts of thousands of fangirls with her good looks and smooth moves. Some even think that she’s more desirable than actual male idols! More pictures of the lady charmer after the break!

There are many girls in Japan who like bishounen (beautiful young men), so it’s no surprise that suave dansou joshi (girls who crossdress as men) such as Root (ルウト; @chitoseruto) are becoming the center of many girls’ fantasies.

Standing at a height of 165cm (5’5″), Root is not particularly tall or well-built, but she has been giving male artistes such as the Johnny’s idols a run for their fangirls. Fans have been raving over how cool yet cute the talented crossdresser is.

▼ This seems to be one of Root’s favorite poses.

▼ We can’t imagine how many girls are dreaming of getting a kabe-don from Root.

Besides modelling for magazines such as KERA, BOKU, Gothic & Lolita Bible, as well as men’s fashion magazine Men’s Spider, Root has also starred in stage adaptations of popular anime/game titles such as Sailor Moon (as Jadeite), Jitsuzai-Sei Million Arthur (as Mordred) and Vampire Knight (as Zero Kiryuu).

On top of that, the charismatic model has also made her singing debut as one third of an ikemen joshi unit known as Signal, produced by famous Vocaloid song writer Hachioji P. Ikemen refers to hot guys, but in this special case, it is paired with the word joshi (girl), which makes it sound kinda oxymoronic, but “hot-guy girls” is perhaps the most fitting description there is for these handsome girls.

The internet can’t seem to get enough beautiful boys and handsome girls. Not that we’re complaining; there’s something strangely mesmerizing about people who can pull off looking like the opposite gender so well that no one can tell the difference. Plus, what’s not to like about someone just being who they are and looking good while doing it?

Well, Tokyo Institute of Technology (東工大/Toukoudai or TIT… okay, get your giggles out now!) seems to feel the same way, because, alongside their Miss Toukoudai Contest they’re having a Mister Bishoujo Contest—bishoujo being the Japanese word for “beautiful young girl”—allowing voters to pick their favorite Mr. Beautiful!

Join us after the jump to check out the contestants!

On September 27, after introducing each candidate with a sneak peek, the TIT contest page on Twitter announced they would begin the pre-contest voting.

“Tomorrow, we will begin preliminary voting for the Mister Bishoujo Contest!
Entry No.1: Akari
Entry No.2: Illu Mina
Entry No.3: Asagiri
Entry No.4: Haruka
Who will you vote for?
Also, tomorrow we will release photos of their faces~~
Keep an eye out for it!”

Over the previous week, they had introduced the candidates one by one, giving teaser photos without fully revealing their faces.

“I’m Akari, contestant No.1. (^o^)
I’m a high school freshman, 16 years old.♪( ´▽`)
I play the trumpet in my school’s wind instrument club!
My first love is my childhood friend Ko-chan, who’s two years older than me (*´ο`*) I can’t bring myself to confess though…”

“I’m Illu Mina, contestant No.2! I’m a 3rd-year high schooler! A senior☆ I’m in the middle of studying for my exams, but I’m having a tough time with math… That’s why I’m getting help every week from tutors at TIT (((o(*゚▽゚*)o)))”

“My name is Asagiri, I’m contestant No.3. I’m 28 years old. At night I work at a bar on the outskirts of town. At my performance in October, you can see me in my work clothes—traditional Japanese wear.”

“Contestant No.4
Name: Haruka
Age: 24
Usual activities, obsessions: I’ve been touring the country as a member of TIT48, doing TV performances, concerts, and events. Recently, in my private life, I’ve been into going alone on trips of self discovery.”

On the 28, they finally revealed the faces of the four candidates!

cute girl boy contest top

Two weeks ago, online voting began for the Tokyo Institute of Technology’s Mister Bishoujo Contest, where the “prettiest” boys were put up for the internet to decide. Now the results are in and a winner has been declared!

And that’s not all: the contestants have put up a lot more photos of themselves in the meantime, so you can take a look at just how impressive their girl game is. Prepare to be amazed, and perhaps slightly confused, after the jump!

Just for a quick recap, the Mister Bishoujo Contest consisted of these four lovely entrants:

▼ No. 1: Akari (high school freshman), No. 2: Irru Mina (high school senior),
No. 3: Asagiri (28 years old), and No. 4: Haruka (24 years old).

And after all the votes were tallied, the winner is…

.

.

.

.

.

Contestant No. 1, Akari!

▼ “The Mister Bishoujo Contest is over! And thanks to everyone’s support, I won! Thank you all so much for your votes and kind words throughout. Here’s a picture of me with two entrants in the Miss Bishoujo Contest (a women’s beauty contest going on at the same time). Thank you all again!”

▼ Here’s a few extra photos of the winner together with friends. (Click to enlarge.)

▼ And hanging out with the Mister/Miss Bishoujo contestants.

Of course just because Akari won, that doesn’t mean the other contestants didn’t rock their own style as hard as they could. Here are some pictures from the other entrants:

▼ Here’s Irru Mina who got second in the contest.

▼ Woo-hoo! Second place!

▼ Lounging around with friends in front of the competition stage.

▼ Here’s a closeup of Asagiri, who apparently took this photo at home. Quite impressive as both the costume and photo quality look professional-grade.

▼ And in a slightly more modern-era Japan getup.

▼ Last but not least, Haruka, strutting her stuff up the staircase.

I think we can agree that all the contestants did an awesome job, so much so that even the typically stone-hearted Japanese netizens were impressed:

“Wow, they look like dolls.”
“They’re all so pretty. I’m in shock.”
“Why do they all look like they have toothaches?”
“(In response) It’s probably to cover up their masculine chin-lines.”
“Wait, I don’t get it. All I see is a bunch of cute girls. What’s so special about this?”

We’re not sure if that last commenter is actually confused or just trying to make a point that all the contestants did a fantastic job. Either way though, we’re just happy that “beautiful boy” contestants are becoming a thing, and slowly but surely the world, or at least Japan, is becoming a more accepting place.

Sailor-style school uniform outfits for men are warm, fleecy and said to reduce stress

Watch out sailor sisters! There’s a new line of sailor-themed clothing on sale and this time it’s the boys’ turn to come out and play. There won’t be any trousers or navy hats here though, because the only thing masculine about these clothes are the bodies that will be going into them.

It’s the Boku Sera (“I’m a Sailor”) range, which uses the Japanese male pronoun boku to highlight exactly what sets the clothes apart from all others we’ve seen before: these are girls’ sailor-style school uniforms, only now they’re built for male bodies.

The unusual roomwear items come from Bibi Lab, a design house which specialises in researching unique ideas and bringing them to life, no matter how wacky they seem. Previously, they’ve given us the full-body mosquito net jumpsuitthe snuggie that covers everything except your hands, nose and mouth, and even life-sized human-shaped pillows. Now they’re taking fleece to a place it’s never been before with two special man-sized sailor-style schoolgirl outfits.

6

The Pure White design features the blue and white colour scheme most commonly associated with Japanese schoolgirls, but if black is more your style, you can opt for a Darkness Black number. Both are available from Japan’s largest e-commerce site Rakuten Ichiba for 6,880 yen (US$57.71) each.

1 2

Bibi Lab designed these outdoor styles as “roomwear” items for a number of specific reasons. Firstly, it’s a great way for men to see what it’s like to wear women’s clothing. While some men have no problem with parading around in public in schoolgirl uniforms, more discreet gentlemen might prefer to dress up in the comfort of their homes, away from prying eyes.

7

And when you’re lazing about at home, you want to be dressed for comfort, which means you don’t want to be squeezing into tight, ill-fitting ladies clothes. Bibi Lab has you covered, by specifically designing their female outfits for the male figure.

▼As long as you fall between a medium or large size, according to the Japanese male sizing system.

19

Bibi Lab is also singing the virtues of wearing women’s clothing, pointing out that the roomy nature of the one-piece provides “zero stress” around the tummy area, meaning you can let it all hang out while remaining comfortably warm and covered at the same time.

5

15

The fleece material increases the comfort level of the clothing so you can lounge around with the lightest of ease. Now that we think about it, fleece uniforms in real schools might actually work, especially in those freezing Japanese classrooms during wintertime.

14

And for those after some girly details, a pair of knee high socks are included, perfect for showing off the much coveted strip of exposed thigh between skirt and sock.

10

12

In their usual light-hearted manner, Bibi Lab also claims that their product can reduce stress. If you’ve had a bad day, or if you’re worried about getting older, simply slip into the comfy sailor suit and all your worries will fade away.

▼ Because sometimes the stress relief of a no-pants lifestyle makes you feel like fireworks are going off behind you.

16

And if you’re a girl who never got to wear the distinctive schoolgirl outfit growing up, this is your chance to make lost dreams come true!

8

▼ From reading to gaming to playing with teddy bears, male models show just how comfortable life in a fleece sailor suit can be.

Japanese commercials are known all over the world for being just as entertaining as the programs they interrupt. Whether they’re ridiculously cute, heartbreakingly sad, a little confusing, or nightmare-inducingly bizarre, most commercials have something special going on.

So what about this commercial? It looks so normal at first; it’s just a bunch of high school girls hanging out in a classroom, playing a guitar, reading, whatever. But then, right in the middle, something happens. Watch it for yourself and see if you can figure it out before the reveal!

In an effort to try and not give anything away, we won’t say what the commercial is for just yet. Take a watch for yourself right here, or scroll down for the highlights, to see what secret these high school girls are hiding:

▼ We start off with a teacher getting ready to go into a classroom full of…

commercial 01

▼ …bored high school students. Well, this is pretty much the most average thing I could possibly imagine.

commercial 02

▼ I guess that’s the glare we deserve for interrupting your guitar.

commercial 03

▼ And your, uh, water-drinking.

commercial 04

▼ Hey, what are you reading over there?
Oh, you’re reading a giant spoiler to explain what’s really going on here? All right then, let’s hear it!

commercial 05

▼ “Did you realize that there are boys in this classroom?”

commercial 06

▼ The secret’s out! All of those girls we saw before are actually guys with lots of makeup and accessories. In the video we get to see all of their girl-parts taken off in fast motion by a group of stylists.

commercial 07

▼ And the same thing happens to water bottle girl…

commercial 08

▼ And guitar girl…

commercial 09

▼ And everyone else in the classroom goes back to their original boy forms.

commercial 10

▼ Even the teacher… though he gets to keep on a little makeup because why not.

commercial 11

▼ In the end this was a SHISEIDO makeup commercial, and they finish with the tagline “anyone can be cute.” Hear that guys? There’s nothing wrong with a little exfoliation/moisturization in your life.

commercial 12

If you haven’t watched the video of the commercial yet, I highly recommend doing so. The fast-motion stylists mixed with the slow panning of the camera look really cool, and it’s hard to show that just using snapshots.

And if you’re curious and want to know who the prettiest boy-dressed-up-as-a-girl in Japan is, then be sure to check out the winner from the recent Mister Bishoujo Contest. All of them could give even these professionally girl-ified boys a run for their money.

Japanese high school boys hold annual beauty pageant, look as cute as ever【Pics】

high school pageant top

Beauty pageants for boys dressed up as girls are kind of a thing in Japan now. Whether you think they’re awesome or kind of confusing, you can’t help but admit that the entrants usually manage to pull off the cute girl look surprisingly well.

This month marks the annual Miss Komaba High School Pageant, a contest that has been going on for several years now and which invites young men to dress like their female peers . Last year’s contestants were pretty good, but can this year’s pretty boys give them a run for their money? Let’s find out!

Komaba High School is an all-boys school in Tokyo, which perhaps helps explain why every year for the past several years in late October/early November they’ve held a contest to have the “prettiest” boys dress up as girls and be voted on in a pageant.

When you think about it, it either makes complete sense or zero sense at all, but either way here’s a look at some of the previous years’ winners:

▼ The winner from 2012, with the potent ugly-sweater-plus-bowler-hat combo.

▼ And last year’s winner. That smile tho.

That’s some pretty stiff competition. Do this year’s contestants have what it takes to run with the best? Let’s take a look and see:

▼ Here’s the youngest entrant, 9th grader Yukina Shimizu.

▼ And here’s 10th grader Mahiro Hayashibara.

▼ And another picture of Mahiro-chan being all like, “hey… what are you looking at?”

▼ Here’s 11th grader Aoi Nakano. Aoi-chan, you’re looking a little, uh, defensive. Let’s relax a bit.

▼ Ah, much better. Oh, why yes, I would like some tea, thank you.

▼ Here’s 12th grader Shiori Kondo.

▼ “What? Pfft, no way. It’s not like I was waiting here for you or anything….”

▼ Here’s 11th grader Yuko Yoshimura.

▼ Yuko-chan… too bright… like an angel….

▼ And finally we have 11th grader Kotoha Fujiyama, who was the winner of the contest for the past two years (the two pictures at the top are of the same person). He’s going for three in a row, but will the competition prove too strong this year?

Unfortunately it seems that you actually have to go to the school in order to vote in the pageant, but hey, they still can’t stop us from picking a favorite! I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty partial to the distant and mysterious Shiori. That said, Yuko’s girl-game is pretty fierce. And then there’s the sassy-looking Mahiro… bah! I can’t choose.

Let us know who you’d vote for and we can all feel confused-yet-oddly-excited together!

Danso revolution! 10 ways to experience crossdressing culture in Tokyo

$
0

Danso—women dressing and performing as men—has been an element of Tokyo girls’ underground culture for years, but with a recent boom in otaku visibility has become more and more popular. Especially big among young women who see danso as the ideal too-perfect-to-be-true guy, danso is even becoming popular among men who think they can learn a thing or two from their cool style. There are now many ways to experience danso culture in Tokyo, but you can enjoy it from abroad, too!

  • Music

The world of danso exists in the 2.5th dimension—halfway between two-dimensional manga protagonists and real people. This dreamworld might seem distant, but danso idols and performers are one of the easiest way to immerse yourself no matter where you’re located.

1. Fudanjuku

Fudanjuku, Japan’s premiere danso idols, have been performing on stage as boys for over seven years. They began as a regular girl idol group by a different name, but after their male personas were met with great approval, it became their main act. Fudanjuku truly provides the best of both world for fans, transforming into cool, friendly and funny guys onstage but returning to regular cute girl status once the show’s over!

Having recently released their 15th single, Fudanjuku can be found at various events throughout Tokyo and around the country, as well as on YouTube with their official account (which is primarily the boys goofing off backstage).

2. The Hoopers

If sleek suits are more your style, be sure to check out the danso music scene’s up-and-comers, The Hoopers. Originally formed as Fudanjuku’s “little brother group,” The Hoopers now perform independently with a fierce dedication to winning girls’ hearts. The boyish girls unit regularly holds events at teen girl paradise JOL Harajuku, where fans can meet, take pictures with and be charmed by their favorite members.

3. Dear Boys

Akihabara’s Dear Stage is famous as the birthplace of idol groups Dempagumi.inc, Moso Calibration and Band Janaimon, but did you know it’s also the home to several danso cast members? If you’re lucky enough to visit Dear Stage’s three-floor stage/café/bar in the back streets of Akihabara, you may get to meet a Dear Boy or even see Senko Planeta Gate, Dear Stage’s current three-member danso performance unit, light up the stage with their glowing LED costumes!

  • Cafés & Bars

One of the ways to step into the 2.5D world of handsome girls is as easy as stepping into one of Tokyo’s several danso cafés and bars. Very similar to maid cafés, these locations offer a variety of drinks, snacks, and of course, ways to interact with the cool cast members.

4. Prince

Just outside the otaku haven of Nakano Broadway is crossdressing bar and café Prince, one of the biggest and most well-known danso establishments around. Offering light meals in addition to drinks and a wide variety of cast members, you’re sure to find your Prince Charming!

5. Queen Dolce

Meanwhile in Akihabara, you can find the cozy Queen Dolce, with a warm atmosphere and playing card theme. Each garçon has an original cocktail that can only be prepared on their shift, and if you feel especially taken with a cast member, you can preserve that moment with a titillating cheki (mini Polaroid) in the pose of your choice (kabedon is especially popular!).

6. Makotozakaya

Got a taste for Japanese history? Also located in Akihabara, Makotozakaya is set at the end of the Edo period, with the cast (or “soldiers”) acting as the new Shinsengumi to bring peace to the world—and excitement to the hearts of customers. Specializing in traditional Japanese dishes like udon and soba, guests also have the option of playing cards or games with the soldier they like!

  • “Dating” a Danso

Danso cafés are nice, but perhaps you’re after a more personal experience. In a culture that caters to all sorts of desires, Tokyo offers many ways to fulfill the fantasy of truly finding your “prince”…. at least, for one night.

7. Club Mistral

cropped-ms_top7

Located in the heart of Tokyo’s host club district is Club Mistral, a “boyish entertainment club” offering a more intimate setting centered around your interaction with the androgynous cast member of your choosing. Once you enter, you can select your favorite cast member and spend as long as you’d like drinking and chatting with them. Like other clubs of this kind, Mistral operates under a pay-by-the-hour system as you enjoy your time talking with your handsome host.

8. W’s Collection

Maybe you’d prefer to be out and about with the “boy”friend of your dreams? Akihabara’s W’s Collection is an escort service (no, nothing 18+ here) that will guide you on a variety of dates around Tokyo, like to a café, on a shopping trip, or even Tokyo Disneyland (if you don’t mind the 240,000+ yen [US$2,000+] price tag.)

  • Fashion

If you’ve taken a look at alternative fashion magazine KERA in the past few years, chances are you’ve seen plenty of danso without even realizing it! Incorporating danso style into everyday fashion has gained such popularity in recent years that the magazine has published several issues of KERA BOKU, especially for boyish girls’ style, and regularly has “Boku Girl” features displaying many types of androgynous fashion as well as makeup and wig styling tutorials for danso-hopefuls.

9. AKIRA

AKIRA02

Fashion model, actor and rock band vocalist AKIRA is by far the most well-known androgynous model on the scene, though her boyish style began before the danso craze was even born. More than purposefully choosing mens’ clothes, AKIRA’s style has evolved naturally as a result of her dislike for strong gender distinctions. Her belief is that gender doesn’t matter, as long as it looks beautiful.

10. Root

Root, another androgynous model, is seeing a rise in popularity recently, appearing next to AKIRA not only on the cover of KERA but on stage in the all-female stage production of the manga Vampire Knight. Root also played the male role of Jadeite in 2013’s Sailor Moon musical, and has formed an androgynous performance unit called Signal, which is worth keeping on your radar!

The danso trend is continuing to pick up speed in Japan, with its sights set on global domination. Whether you’re dreaming of danso from the comfort of your home or hoping for a chance encounter here in Tokyo, don’t miss out on the danso revolution!

It was quite a show at the Rakuten Eagle Fan Festival 2015, where players from the Japanese professional baseball team dressed as female look-alikes drew the most laughs and smiles from the audience.

On November 23, the Rakuten Eagles held their annual Fan Festival at Kobo Stadium Miyagi in Sendai. Eagle fans braved the cold and rainy weather to watch the team dance to “R.Y.U.S.E.I.” by J Soul Brothers, play tug-of-war with children, and cast their vote for the prettiest cross-dressing player in the Rakuten Eagles Girls’ Contest.

Seven team members participated in the contest, offering embarrassed grins or fan service after their identities were revealed. Can you guess who is who?

Fans voted Karashima the prettiest woman, while announcers chose Tomura and Otsuka as the least beautiful. As a prize, Karashima was given his makeover wig to take home, which he reluctantly accepted.

When asked what he would do with the wig, Karashima answered that he’d decorate his entryway with it and wear it to future games.

Our male reporter transforms into a beautiful Japanese courtesan at Tokyo photo studio

01

If you want to become a geisha, maiko, samurai or courtesan, gender is no barrier at this Asakusa photo studio.

It wasn’t long ago we told you about Nanairo, the photo studio in Asakusa that did an incredible job of turning our very own Mr. Sato into a sword-wielding samurai warrior. The transformation was so impressive that it wasn’t long before another of our reporters, Nakazawa, revealed his dream for an Edo-style makeover. Only this time he wanted to shed his geeky male persona and feel beautiful for a change so he opted to dress like a sexy oiran courtesan.

▼ Nakazawa stands in front of Studio Nanairo before the transformation.

2

While the male courtesan packages are not part of their usual plans, the experience can be specially arranged by prior appointment. Once you arrive on the day, you’ll spend some time in the hair and makeup chair before being dressed in a glamorous kimono and haori (traditional kimono coat), followed by a thirty-minute photo shoot in a beautiful space designed to look like a room in the pleasure quarters.

▼ The result

3

▼ Goodbye Nakazawa, hello sexy courtesan!

4

Before the photo shoot began, the studio staff asked for some directives. Our reporter said he wanted to feel beautiful. Sexy images would be good, exposed skin shots were okay, and he’d like a stunning, over-the-top look.

▼ He got everything he asked for.

8

▼ There are also a number of gorgeous props to help you get into character, like long pipes which were commonly used by courtesans back in the day…

5

▼ …adorable fox masks…

6

▼ …lacy, gold-flecked fans…

13

▼ …and traditional Japanese umbrellas. You can add a smile too if you like, but Nakazawa preferred to channel a more stern seductress.

14

▼ It’s hard to imagine that underneath the courtesan’s clothes and makeup lies this less glamorous yet equally loveable character!

7

▼ We have seen this pose in the office, although it’s decidedly less alluring when he’s wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

9

Nakazawa was blown away by the experience and the photos he received at the end. He said he couldn’t even recognise himself and felt like an absolute princess with the team of professional staff fussing over him.

12

He’d never worn false eyelashes before and he loved the effect it had, elongating and opening up his eyes. He was also surprised by the tightness of the obi sash and the heaviness of the elaborate kimono and haori. It’s not easy work being a sought-after courtesan!

15

The whole experience took about 3 hours and cost a total of 25,000 yen (US$204), which included 24 photos from the day. The staff was excellent, guiding Nakazawa through the process from beginning to end so efficiently that the time flew by without him even noticing.

17

There are a variety of packages to choose from, so if you’re interested in transporting yourself to a different era of Japan, be sure to check out their website for more details.

Chinese “otoko no ko” Alice stuns netizens with his hypnotizing beauty【Pics】

Yet again proving that you don’t have to be born a girl to be a beautiful woman. (Possibly NSFW)

We’ve seen the rise of “otoko no ko,” boys who dress up as and can pass for very cute girls, in plenty of other Asian countries. It’s old news for Thailand, and in Japan there’s even annual contests held at schools to pick the most beautiful “otoko no ko.”

And now it seems like it’s China’s turn to get on the crossdressing bandwagon. One “otoko no ko” who goes by the name Alica Haoge on Chinese social media has recently caught the attention of Japanese netizens, and it’s not hard to see why. Here’s a sample of the photos available on Alice’s Weibo account:

▼ Just a casual absolutely perfect Kotori Minami cosplay from Love Live!

▼ “Oh hey guys! Do you think this is okay to wear to the beach?”

alice haoge 02

▼ Are… are we sure Alice isn’t 100-percent girl?

alice haoge 03

To answer that question: yes, we are sure! Here are some pictures of Alice without all the costumes and wigs so you can see for yourself:

▼ It takes someone extremely confident in their masculinity to be comfortable posing with a teddy bear. Oh, and to dress up as a sexy woman and share the pics online.

While there were a lot of posts of Japanese netizens questioning their life decisions up until this point, many of them were positive. Here’s what some of them had to say:

“This is amazing.”
“Alice looks like a painting.”
“Is this some sort of Chinese propaganda meant to hypnotize me?”
“Don’t care, still hot!”
“This definitely raises my opinion of Chinese quality.”

That’s probably not the only thing these pictures are raising… hopefully they’re raising awareness of other “otoko no ko” in China by giving them all someone to look up to. What? What did you think I meant?

Girls- and men dressed as girls- just want to have fun, and now they can at Bar☆Onna no Ko Club.

While BarOnna no Ko Club isn’t the first crossdressing bar in Japan, it might be the most luxurious yet. Set to open its doors on April 1 in Ueno, Tokyo, it’s the third establishment by Onna no Ko Club, the same company that previously set-up crossdressing bars in Shinjuku and Osaka.

Onna no Ko Club in Shinjuku

Much like their other locations, this new bar will be open to crossdressers, trans women and men, and guests of any gender. Decorated in pink with chandeliers and counter-style seating for up to 15 people, it promises to be a fun, girly space where people can easily drink, talk, make new friends, and dress up if they choose to.

baronnanoko

In fact, the bar practically encourages you to do so with its full dress-up salon, along with crossdressing and transgender staff who are more than willing to help you achieve the perfect, girly make-over.

Partially because of more crossdressing events and spaces like BarOnna no Ko Club popping up in recent years, Japan is slowly beginning to view crossdressing in a more positive light, as well as address other related LGBT issues. Crossdressing netizens have even carved out a space on social media sites like Twitter, using the tag #josoudanshi (#crossdresser), even though it might inevitably mean being recognized by someone in real life.

“Boku Sera” sailor uniform loungewear for men is back with a new version for spring

As the weather warms up, our clothes lighten up, just like the spring version of the wildly popular men’s sailor loungewear!

Guys, if you were hoping to get the fleecy sailor uniform loungewear that sold out in just two days last winter, now’s your chance! BIBI LAB, thendesigning company behind all things weird, has heeded the call for comfortable women’s wear designed to fit a man’s body, as otokonoko and crossdressing in general becomes more widely accepted.

Behold, the Boku Sera (“Boku” being a masculine word for “I” and “Sera” from the Japanese pronunciation of “sailor”):

f06

f02

The average man’s shape and body type make it difficult for guys looking to crossdress to find women’s clothes that don’t cut off circulation to their arms or hug the body in all the wrong places. But the new spring version of the “Boku Sera” includes all guy-friendly points of the first winter version, this time in a lighter, more breathable sweatshirt-type material.

f07

The spring Boku Sera will go on sale on April 8, and is available for preorder through Amazon Japan, Animate, Rakuten, and Village Vanguard (sorry, all sites are Japanese only). If you’ve got your eye on this, judging by how quickly the winter version sold out (even though it was thought there was enough stock to last for half a year), you might want to jump at the chance while you still can!

Gender-bending maid cafe in Taiwan, where guys dress up in maid outfits to serve you 【Pics】

For those who prefer their maids a bit more on the muscly side.

We’ve seen a plethora of different maid cafes, everything from “plump” girl cafes to McDonald’s maid cafes to even zombie maid cafes. But no matter the theme, each cafe has had the same universal trait: being staffed by cute girls.

But now one maid cafe in Taiwan is turning even that basic assumption on its head. Instead of staffing their cafe with cute girls, their maids are a little hairier and more masculine.

This cafe is staffed by guys dressed up as maids:

▼ Just look at that happy customer flanked by two adorable maids!

▼ Although we have to admit, the cafe’s advertising doesn’t
exactly make the fact that it’s staffed by men quite obvious.

▼ But to be fair, they’re not really a maid cafe – they’re a steak house.
That makes sense though, since they’ve got plenty of meat to go round.

▼ It’s not easy being a dude in a maid outfit serving up steak, but sometimes you just gotta roll up your sleeves and work it like it needs to be worked.

▼ And, every now and then, form a heart shape with your fellow maids.

▼ Wait… is that a female maid off to the left?! Blasphemy!

▼ Noble Family Steak House – a fun dining experience for the whole family!

Here’s what Japanese netizens thought of the maid cafe staffed by dudes:

“Hey, that’s false advertising!”
“Well I know where I’m visiting if I ever go to Taiwan.”
“I’m not ready for those high level maids.”
“Is this an all-boys school? These things tend to happen at all-boys schools.”

While these maids may not be winning any school “beautiful boy contests” anytime soon, that’s just fine because they’re clearly happy just being dudes wearing maid outfits. And that’s awesome, because if there’s one thing this world needs, it’s as many flavors of people as possible.

Japanese town’s mascot character may be a man dressed in women’s clothing, possibly on purpose

Everyone notices the girlish clothes, but those with a trained eye have also spotted the boyish wings.

Last week, the organizers of the upcoming Tokyo Comic-Con found themselves at the center of a sudden firestorm when it came to light that the event’s official cosplay regulations prohibited men from dressing as female characters. Tokyo Comic-Con has since reversed its stance, which is happy news for the crossplaying contingent of the cosplay community and also, possibly, for Simone-chan, a local mascot character for the town of Shimotsuma in Ibaraki Prefecture.

While Simone-chan has a warm smile and expressive eyes, the character’s most distinguishing visual characteristic is, of course, the pair of butterfly wings. And those aren’t modeled on the wings of just any butterfly, but of the sasakia charonda, Japan’s officially designated national butterfly, for which Shimotsuma is a natural habitat. The sasakia charonda is also known as the Japanese emperor or great purple emperor, and true to its name, the species is known for the violet colorings on its wings, which also appear in Simone-chan’s design.

bc-2

But also true to the great purple emperor name, it’s male specimens that have these purple markings. Like many animals that need to maximize their chances for survival, males have bright patterns to help attract mates, while females have a far more camouflaged appearance.

▼ Female great purple emperor

bc-3

So, as pointed out by Japanese Twitter user @Re__Mio, despite Simone-chan’s decidedly girlish attire, based on those wings, the character is actually an otoko no ko, or crossdressing male.

For its part, the city of Shimotsuma has declined to officially comment on Simone-chan’s gender, nor has it released any sort of character profile confirming or denying that the character is a man dressed in women’s clothing. While it’s possible that the character’s designers added the purple coloring for purely aesthetic reasons, the fact that Simone itself is a unisex name suggests that they might have intended to make the mascot’s sex ambiguous from the very start.

The newfound notoriety is causing a spike in interest in the character, and Shimotsuma’s Michi no Eki roadside rest stop is standing by with a selection of related merchandise for all of Simone-chan’s new fans.

Ladybeard wows the web with his one-man Beauty and the Beast cosplay

Our favorite crossdressing local celebrity shows us beauty at its best.

When our hero Ladybeard isn’t wrestling old men or coming out with his next hit metal song, you’re likely to find him totally killing it at cosplay. We’ve seen his costuming talents before, when he stunned Comiket-goers with his perfect Chun-Li cosplay, and now he’s at it again, this time with a brilliant twofer.

Beauty and the Beast on my own,” reads the Japanese text at the beginning of the tweet, which is followed by three shots of our bearded beauty, giving Emma Watson a run for her money in the classic golden gown worn by Belle in Disney’s adaptations of the French fairy tale. While he is gloriously glamorous with his silky locks done up and his poses right on point, his strong stature and plentiful facial and body hair gives him an undeniably Beast-ly air.

The genius of Ladybeard’s two-for-one cosplay has not gone unnoticed by his online followers:

“Is Beauty the Beast, or is the Beast Beauty?”
“Beauty is the Beast.”
“Beauty or Beast?! This is really good! Amazing!”
“Oh! Wow! Beard-chan has turned into such a beauty! So lovely!”
“Beauty as the Beast”
“So cute! I want to see more.”

The photos have been retweeted over 17,000 times and liked more than 21,000 since they were posted last week. We can’t imagine what to expect next from Ladybeard, but whether it’s another insanely epic commercial or a high quality cosplay photo shoot, we’re sure we won’t be disappointed!

Crossdressing hobbyist tricks, possibly traumatizes his nephew with high school girl’s uniform

Now you see her, now you don’t!

What may have started as an innocent prank between uncle and nephew took an abrupt turn for the worse, when Twitter-user @kitigai_dayo convinced his five-year-old nephew that a girl he met had gone the way of the Wicked Witch and melted away. @kitigai_dayo, who regularly posts photos of himself crossdressed as a very convincing female, relayed the story on his Twitter, accompanied by a snapshot of the offending scene:

“This morning, my nephew was running around the house, looking for the girl I had dressed up as.
Nephew: Where’s the Switch lady? (He calls her the Switch lady because she’d given him a Nintendo Switch)
Me: Come look in the bathroom… She’s melted away.
Nephew: WAAAAAAAHH!!!
He continued wailing for an hour

I’m the kind of scum that traumatizes little five-year-olds
My older brother was not happy with me”

@kitigai_dayo later explained in the comments that he had played Mario Cart with his nephew for a couple of hours dressed as “Switch lady”. Even though he kept up his best lady’s voice, he thought his nephew had caught on, but that apparently wasn’t the case.

Of course, netizens had lots to say about the matter:

“Terrible! lol”
“I feel bad for your nephew but, I love this lol.”
“How low can you go.”
(In reply to the above) “I spent 50 thousand yen (US$450) on a present for him and the next day I’m treated like a criminal.”
“What a cute nephew lol.”
“Will your older brother dress as the Switch lady?”

We hope that the little nephew has recovered from this tragic experience, although @kitigai_dayo says that Switch lady might make a reappearance during the Japanese holiday of Obon, where spirits of family members who have passed are said to come back to earth. Hopefully she comes bearing gifts again, at least!
