Cross-dressing man in women-only train car causes controversy in Japan

The women-only cars on Japan’s train lines have been increasingly met with controversy over the last few years, with calls for it to be eliminated altogether. Those special pink cars have again come under scrutiny after the photo above depicting a cross-dressing man occupying the women-only car surfaced on Japanese website, Hamster Sokuhou.

But was the man doing anything wrong? Let’s take a look at comments from Japanese netizens.

In response to the picture above, users on Hamusoku had this to say:

That’s clearly a dude…and what’s up with those shoes?

The seats are completely open to his left and right. Looks like everyone else completely noticed him.

You’re out!

That’s no good!

Nice legs!

It’s terrible how the woman on the right is trying to avoid him.

Where would you look if he was actually right in front of you?

In his heart he’s a woman, so isn’t it okay?

Even if a guy does ride in the women-only car, he’s not going to get in trouble.

Yeah, because it’s not actually a law, it’s merely a request asking for people to cooperate with the rules of the women-only carriage.

You have to admire his courage…or is he just doing it because he likes it?

As you can see, reviews of the incident were mixed but generally positive with occasional “LOL”s sprinkled throughout. While Internet comments supported the man, judging by the body language of the two women next to him, they were clearly uncomfortable, with the woman on the right angling her body away and the other putting her bags and jacket on the seat to create a barrier. What do you think about this cross-dressing man riding in the women-only car? Do you agree with the users who say that if he believes he’s a woman, there’s no problem?

We’ve seen way too many beautiful guys who look like girls. Hell, some of them even look prettier than real girls. We know some of you are starting to get bored with looking at “traps” all the time, so here, the tables are turned this time! This handsome face belongs to a girl! It’s still some time before April Fool’s Day so you can be assured that we’re not kidding you!

We can already hear some of you lamenting, “What is this world turning to?!”, and just so you know, we share your sentiments. But any eye candy is good for the eyes, regardless if it’s a “trap” or not, right?

This handsome lad… erm, lady, has been one of the hottest topics on Weibo, China’s very own version of Twitter. The 23-year old Yachen Xing is a student at the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University & School of the Arts (the two schools have merged into one), majoring in animation. The lanky lady stands at 173cm tall (5’7″) and is a representative of the school’s women’s basketball team. Let’s take a look at some of Yachen’s photos.

She quickly rocketed to fame among Chinese netizens due to her suave, idol-like appearance, and seems to have started modelling as well. Yachen has also earned the reputation of “the most handsome girl-hunk in history” on Chinese internet sites, and has a large following of fangirls on Weibo who regard her as their Prince Charming.

To the dismay of many of her fangirls, Yachen seems to already have a girlfriend, and a pretty cute girlfriend at that! They look so good together, we feel as if we’re watching some manga-inspired idol drama!

Perhaps you remember Ladybeard from our previous post a couple of weeks ago introducing the cross-dressing bearded pro-wrestler, performer, heavy metal singer and party rocker. Well, it would seem that Ladybeard recently met up with another iconic cross-dresser in Japan, the “Sailor Suit Old Man”.

A hairy burly man and a balding old man in schoolgirl uniforms may sound like an absolute turn off, but they looked so happy, we couldn’t help but think they actually look somewhat cute. Here’s the most epic schoolgirl combi in history!

If you haven’t heard of the “Sailor Suit Old Man” before, this cheerful elderly bearded fellow, Hideaki Kobayashi, made his first public appearance in a sailor suit uniform in 2010 at an art and design event known as Design Festa. Kobayashi, who is a photographer and producer, had an exhibition booth at the event and upon hearing that Candy Milky (a famous cross-dresser in Japan) was coming to visit his booth, decided to put on a schoolgirl look to welcome his guest. His cross-dressing efforts paid off as he instantly became a sensation at the event.

Since then, Kobayashi began participating in the annual event in his schoolgirl outfit, and gradually got the hang of it. Now, he dresses up in his signature sailor suit uniform on most weekends when he heads out. His cheerful disposition and enthusiastic response whenever he’s asked for a photo have contributed to his fame, and it’s said that he gets photo-mobbed by the public wherever he goes. There’s even an urban legend that if you meet him on the streets, happiness is bound to come your way.

So, what do you think happens when the “Sailor Suit Old Man” meets Ladybeard? As unbelievable as this may sound, schoolgirls start squealing at how cute they look together. Here are the pictures taken of the irresistible “schoolgirl” duo when they strolled down the streets of Harajuku in Japan!

The new product for all Japanese men who wish they were little girls

musume

Are you a guy wanting to try out makeup for the first time? Well Japan, the land where anything goes, has just the thing for you. Allow us to introduce the ‘my first makeup set’ especially for otokonoko! Otokonoko is written with the kanji character for ‘man’ and ‘young woman’ or ‘daughter’, and is a word used to describe men who look and dress like women.

Japan has a long history of genderbending and crossdressing, especially in the 2D universe of anime and manga, so this isn’t actually such a shocking thing to find on a shop shelf in Akihabara.

From the package designs, this is clearly a product that has been born from the weird and wonderful world of otaku culture. The pure, innocent, little-sister (imouto) type girl is a staple of harem anime everywhere, and maybe there are some guys out there who love the trope so much that they’d actually go so far as to try and transform themselves into a little girl. Whether or not these small makeup sets will actually help is another matter, but I’m sure they appreciate the sentiment.

Not everyone thinks this is a great idea though. One twitter user’s reaction was simply, ‘I’ve had it with this country…’

▼ The first set includes lipstick, foundation, and a powder puff, plus the tag line ‘with this you can transform into a charming otokonoko’! And of course there’s the obligatory wide-eyed anime character of indeterminate age.

musume1

▼ Set number two is a manicure set to pretty up your nails, and comes with a red and a pink nail polish, and a bottle of remover. A note to guys putting on nail polish for the first time – you’ll need that remover!

musume2

▼ And this is… a full body fishnet suit?!

musume3

I go by the motto ‘live and let live’, and my only gripe here is that I’m confused as to why men would need different makeup to women? Smells like a marketing ploy to me. The modified body suit, on the other hand, is a little more understandable…

Big sisters in Japan dress their little brothers up as girls, with cute/hilarious results

It would seem that dressing your little brother up as a girl is one of the most enjoyed pastimes of elder siblings all around the world. In Japan, too, many elder sisters and brothers are putting their younger male siblings through extreme makeovers to make them pretty little ladies!

It’s kind of surprising to learn that many younger brothers, some already in their teens, seem quite willing to let their big sisters dress them up in skirts and dresses, but what’s even more surprising is that many of these “victims” actually look rather cute as girls!

I don’t have a younger brother of my own, so I’m not sure what it’s like to have one, but I do remember having fun playing hairdresser with my younger cousin when we were kids, tying his hair into multiple little pigtails. I guess if I had a little brother I would most likely have attempted to dress him up as a girl just like some of these Japanese Twitter users did!

Internet falls in love with Chinese cosplaying beauty, disappointed to hear she’s a guy 【Updated】

cosplayer

Love-struck netizens across China, Taiwan and Japan have been voicing their disappointment after finding out that the exceptionally cute girl pictured above is actually an exceptionally cute boy. This isn’t the first time this kind of switcheroo has happened (it’s quite common actually) but netizens seem to be especially upset this time around. Maybe it’s this young man’s choice of outfit (characters from the light novel The “Hentai” Prince and the Stony Cat.) or maybe it’s just how different his before and after photos are, but one things for sure: this cosplayer is a total hottie.

Update: In its original form, this story alluded to online rumors and supposed “proof” that cosplayer AHO is in fact male. As many of our readers have pointed out, that information appears to be false, and the cosplayer has been plagued by this rumor for some time. AHO is indeed every bit as female as she looks, and we apologize for unintentionally perpetuating this untruth. The fact of the matter is, as we acknowledged in our original article, whether man or woman the cosplaying skills displayed in AHO’s photographs are stunning, and we invite you to view more on her Facebook fan page here.

I would also like to personally apologize for the sloppy journalism displayed on my part. There were several factual errors in the article and I regret perpetuating rumors and false information found online, regardless of the number of times we have met with cases of stunning female cosplayers who turned out to be male all along.

Going by the name “AHO,” the beauty above resides in China and keeps up an active Facebook account filled with enough costumed poses to give you inspiration for your own photo shoot. Here she is in action:

Japan slowly begins to openly discuss crossdressing men in heterosexual relationships

$

yuridanshi1

Crossdressing and genderbending are not only long-time staples of Japanese anime and manga, but also of TV and celebrity culture. From this, anyone would think that Japan was one of the most open and accepting countries when it comes to people who don’t fit into traditional gender roles or relationships. However, the reality outside of media and entertainment is often quite different. Family and work life are both still clearly divided down gender lines, and men who engage in anything that blurs or crosses these lines are generally shunned. But could the girl who dumps a guy just because he turns up to a date in a dress be the one who’s really missing out?

The recent announcement of the divorce of Japanese power couple actress Miho Nakayama and her writer/director husband Hitonari Tsuji has set tongues in the celebrity gossip blogosphere wagging, not least because one of the reasons for their split is rumored to be that Tsuji’s wife was not happy when he began to adopt a more feminine look, including growing his hair long and painting his nails. Spurred on by this, an article on dot.asahi has interviewed people quick to come to the defense of relationships where the man steps outside of traditional images of masculinity.

Terms such as transgendered and transvestite have loaded meanings in English that don’t always correlate with Japanese views, so in this case we’ll be using the Japanese term ‘otoko no ko‘. The terms otoko no ko and josoushi are used  to describe a man who dresses like, and sometimes also lives like, a woman. Otoko no ko has the same reading as the word for ‘boy’ (男の子), but in this case the final kanji character is replaced with the one for ‘daughter’ (男の娘), which changes the meaning.

According to Naoko Tachibana, the otoko no ko boom began around 2009 and continues to grow with the launch of makeup magazines and salons catering specifically to them. It’s certainly true that companies have been scrambling to get their fingers in the pie of this niche market with all kinds of unnecessary products!

Naoko is a photographer and author of otoko no ko photobook Yuri Danshi, and she sees between 20 and 30 crossdressers in her studio every month. As such, she has plenty of opportunities to find out about the love lives of these guys, and apparently they’re doing pretty well for themselves. She says that women are attracted to them because they have ‘the cuteness and beauty of a woman’, but the contrast with their still very much intact ‘maleness’ is exciting.  It’s also fun for girls to dress them up like a doll, putting makeup on them and choosing clothes for them.

Of course, a man will not necessarily be aware of his own inclinations when he marries, and it may only be years later that he ‘awakens’ to it. According to Naoko, ‘there are three times in a man’s life when he might awaken to the fact that he enjoys women’s clothing. First is puberty, the next is in his 30s/40s, and finally in his 60s after retirement. At times when the role expected of a man in society and the household changes, they can experience a ‘gender crisis’.’

▼ Never too old.

ssom
Unfortunately, due to societal pressure to conform, many men will keep it to themselves, which couples counselor Mariko Murakoshi says leads to much anxiety. She points out that there are plenty of sporty and androgynous women out there, so why shouldn’t there be men who enjoy more feminine styles. She also believes that women can find lots to love in a softer kind of man who shares their world view, rather than the stereotypical domineering husband. And not only that, but they’ll be able to go clothes and makeup shopping together! Unless of course she’s actually a tomboy…

Naoko agrees with Mariko that the key is to be open, and insists that ‘couples where the woman approves of her man being an otoko no ko are long-lasting! Since learning that you enjoy wearing women’s clothing isn’t something you can just ‘grow out of’, you shouldn’t hide it. I have seen many couples whose bonds have been strengthened by accepting this.

While this article is overly sugary and fails to address the many fears and worries that not only the otoko no ko themselves but also their partners must face, it’s refreshing to hear people talking positively about something that most of Japanese society still doesn’t really know how to deal with.

Trust your mum when she tells you not to place too much trust in what you see on the Internet. Especially when it comes to photos of cute girls. Who knows, she may be a beautiful boy. Or even, a middle-aged man.

Do you see where this is going yet? Surprise surprise, these sweet-looking Lolita twins are in fact a middle-aged Japanese man in disguise (both are played by the same man), and that’s not all he has up his sleeve! More pictures after the jump!

Going by the username of Sutiblr or すちうる(suchiuru) online, this amateur photographer and cross-dresser based in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, is believed to be in his thirties. Although he appears to be active on several online platforms including Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter and Flickr, little information about the mysterious cross-dresser is revealed on either of his pages.

His passion for Lolita fashion and Japanese randoseru backpacks, however, is evident in many of his shots.

“Retweet if you thought I was a girl”: This beautiful young man, in his own words【Photos】

“My name is Kaoru Oshima. I am a boy. I dress as a girl.

I don’t want to be a girl. But I want to look like a girl.

Some people might call me transgender, transvestite, or a cross-dresser, but none of those labels really fit.”

As photos of Kaoru Oshima rack up thousands of favourites and retweets on Twitter, it seems the Japanese model and adult video star is being showered with questions about gender and sexuality – and handling the queries with aplomb. Here’s Kaoru in his own words (and, of course, pictures!)

In case you hadn’t guessed, depending on how your boss feels about nipples, things are about to get moderately NSFW.

▼ Kaoru tweets: “I’m a boy, so there’s nothing embarrassing about this photo!”

▼ “Haven’t taken any pics with my clothes off for a while.”

Twitter reacted enthusiastically:

“Yahoooooooooo!!!!”

“An angel!”

“So sexy! (・∀・)”

▼ “Newsflash!” tweets Kaoru. “If you wear only the belt from a Survey Corps [Attack on Titan] costume, it’s pretty sexy.” Oh, we know, Kaoru!

▼ “Do you like boys in corsets? Retweet and make me famous!

Bmsjs3mCIAAqUQ1@Oshima_Kaoru via Twitter

b333fafaLivedoor

In April this year, Kaoru tweeted this pretty awesome “I am what I am” statement:

“My name is Kaoru Oshima.
I am a boy.
I dress as a girl.
I’m not a “new half” [male-to-female transsexual].
I don’t want to be a girl. But I want to look like a girl.
Sexual preference? I like both women and men.
Some people might call me transgender, transvestite, or a cross-dresser, but none of those labels really fit.”

Crossdressing in Japan is at once ubiquitous and invisible. As in many other countries, it’s often assumed that all men who wear “women’s clothes” want to change their gender, or are gay. But Kaoru seems to spell out in simple terms that the clothes he wears and his sexuality are separate things. He also says that although people try to categorise him, none of the words feel quite right.

His YouTube channel self-introduction features this (significantly blunter) English caption, in which we can’t help feeling something got a little lost in translation:

“My name is Kaoru Oshima. I am a pornstar. But I am a man.”

Anyway, you can hear Kaoru’s dulcet tones in the self-intro here:

One thing’s for sure: Kaoru’s already got thousands of fans. And at least no one’s accusing him of “trapping” them or pretending to be something he’s not.

Every time we make a post about guys crossdressing as girls, there are bound to be the people who take things in a positive light and appreciate their crossdressing efforts, the seasoned net surfers who lament that they’ve seen enough of guys looking like girls, and those who are inclined to delve deeper and think that we’re either encouraging such crossdressing behavior or discriminating these crossdressers.

Well, the Internet is an open platform for people to freely express themselves after all, be it in the form of comments, photographs, or even videos. You know you can always count on us to bring you the oddest stuff from the weird corners of the Internet. So get your pinch of salt and get ready to shoot us your wildest comments, because apparently there are guys out there who enjoy dancing in colorful tutus to their favorite anime idols’ songs!

We’ve seen how the pop idol themed anime, Love Live, has conquered the hearts of fans all over the world. Cute girls in short skirts dancing and singing to catchy songs… not to mention that they’re 2D, we can totally see why anime otakus of the world are smitten with the series. As we’ve previously shared, the hit series has sent fans to their knees at the sight of a Love Live wrapped train, and inspired the even more hardcore followers to permanently ink themselves with Love Live characters.

This group of happy chubby guys who call themselves Debu Raibu (a pun on the Japanese pronounciation of Love Live, Rabu Raibu. “Debu” means fatso in Japanese) however, show their love for the series by putting on some rainbow-colored tutus and dancing to their tune! The video is slightly over a year old, but it doesn’t change how infectious Debu Raibu’s cheerful spirits are!

▼ If you’re not familiar with Love Live, here’s the comparison to the original animation.

We know how severe the Japanese are towards chubbies, and it was totally awesome to see these guys looking confident in their bizarre costumes and having a whole lot of fun with the dance. We couldn’t hold in our laughter (in a good way!) as we watched the cheerful performance! We hope their happiness and positive energy has rubbed off on you and perked up your day like it did to ours!

Screen Shot 2014-09-05 at 07.12.54

We’ve seen plenty about virtual girlfriends, fun little apps that provide you with all the charms of an attractive girl (well, almost all) without the inconvenience of having to deal with a real person. Well, what if you’ve been waiting for the crossdressing male version…?!

In Dolly Kanon, the newly announced Nintendo 3DS game from Happinet, you can take on the role of musical producer as you manage your secret cross-dressing boyfriend’s career as a music idol!

Dolly Kanon
, or to give it its full name Dolly Kanon Dokidoki Tokimeki Himitsu no Ongaku Katsudou Start Desu!! (got that?) is a game adaptation of the shōjo manga by Yū Yabūchi. Join junior high school student Kokone as she helps beautiful boy Soushi become a star.

508140

Dolly Kanon (ドーリィ♪カノン ) has been running as a shōjo manga in Ciao since 2012. Using the stage name Kanon, teenager Soushi moonlights as an idol, thus combining the secretly-famous excitement of Hannah Montana with all the crossdressing thrills of a Shakespeare play.

▼ Kokone, Soushi and (could they be the same person?!!) Kanon.

Screen Shot 2014-09-05 at 09.49.22

As Kanon’s manager, your main task is to produce music videos for her:
508141

This requires you to choose her clothes, on a four-point scale consisting of ‘cute, elegant, cool, sporty‘, which incidentally is the mantra I chant to myself every morning as I get dressed.

508144

And ‘direct’ the videos, which seems to have the same meaning here as ‘decorate with stickers’.

▼ To be fair, it is ostensibly a game for little girls.

508149

There’s also a collaboration with über-genki morning kids’ TV presenters Oha-girl, featuring brand new songs:

Dolly Kanon Dokidoki Tokimeki Himitsu no Ongaku Katsudou Start Desu!! is out November 20, priced 5,480 yen (US $52). Make sure to call it by its full name at all times, or it might ditch you for a new virtual player.

Seeing double? Twin-like couple wed in the most controversial marriage in Russia【Photos】

Are your eyes playing tricks on you? Maybe.

Take another look at that picture up there. They’re not twins, not even sisters. They are romantically involved, and they might be best friends, but they’re definitely not gay. The couple pictured above are husband and wife. Which one is the husband? Find out after the break!

There is often a lot of controversy over crossdressing, no matter which part of the world you live in. There are people who don’t think well of crossdressers, which is perfectly fine since everyone should be entitled to their own opinions, but for some unknown reason, there seems to be a handful of those who think that crossdressing makes people “turn gay”.

Until some scientist can prove that bizarre hypothesis, I’m not buying that story. One person might not be enough to prove anything, but Alina Davis (whose actual name is Dimitriy Kozhuhov), is androgynous but was born a man and just recently got married to a woman while dressed in a wedding dress.

The 23-year-old Russian dresses as a woman most of the time and looks almost like a carbon copy of his 21-year-old wife, Ellison Brux. Same-sex marriages aren’t legal in Russia, and the twin-like couple encountered deterring opinions from the registry office when they wanted to get married dressed as two brides, but the authorities had no means of refusing their union because they are by birth a man and a woman.

Alina reveals that they faced obstacles even on their big day, and were made to use the establishment’s rear entrance in the registry officer’s attempt to hide them from the public’s eye as they were “a disgrace”. We think they look exactly like a just-married couple should: unable to keep their hands off each other.

Social norms are different everywhere, but I’m pretty sure there are lots of things that people do that are way more disgraceful than crossdressing or accepting your loved ones for who they are. How would you react if your significant other wanted to walk down the aisle dressed just like you? Share your views in the comments section below!

New sanitary panties for crossdressing men come complete with sanitary pads!

Tama Toys, the makers of the “my first makeup set” for otokonoko, have been steadily expanding their lineup targeted at men who have a thing for dressing up as girls, and they just made a new breakthrough with their new latest product, sanitary panties for men. The product even comes packaged with a sanitary napkin enclosed because we all know males menstruate too.

Otokonoko (おとこの娘), written with a kanji character which means “daughter” or “young woman”, refers to men who look and dress like girls. Of course, these men could always purchase and wear actual women’s clothing, but that didn’t deter Tama Toys from expanding the line of products for the niche market of otokonoko, specifically those who have an interest in otaku culture.

▼ Specially designed for otokonoko: lingerie sets, high school girl uniforms and more.

Packaged with illustrations of meek looking androgynous characters on the box, the newest addition to the product lineup are lacy sanitary panties in two color variations.

Sanitary panties are special underwear designed for the use with sanitary napkins during that time of the month. They usually come in a cutting that provides excellent coverage and fit to prevent leakage, and the crotch area is double-layered so that the wings of the sanitary pad can be tucked in between the fabric to help keep the pad in place even with vigorous movement. Many Japanese women use sanitary panties because they’re comfortable and easy to use with pads, and also simply because it sucks to get stains on the cute undies they’d want to use on most days of the month.

▼ The “sanitary panties for otokonoko” come with a sanitary pad in the box to fulfil the purpose of the sanitary underwear.
53e1d12f4fc18e

Perhaps the imaginative otokonoko would see the fun in using these sanitary goods, but as you would have expected, the non-otokonoko population is slightly (or make that very much) baffled by the idea. As one Twitter user plainly comments, “when would be the day (these would come in handy)…”

Well, we’ve heard of the rare case of a man getting his period, so… we’ll never know!

Ao-nyan: Japan’s super-feminine model who’s, yes, actually a guy 【Photos】

AN 10

Earlier this week, we talked about Thailand’s Tom subculture. Stemming from the word “tomboy,” Toms are women who follow the fashion trends and speech patterns of men, oftentimes so completely that they win over the romantic affections of other women.

Today, we’re crossing over to the other side of things with a look at rising Japanese celebrity Ao-nyan, whose feminine looks and girlish style are winning fame and fans, even though the model is a guy.

While Ao-nyan, who’s also known as Midori Kamo, is the sort of individual who challenges a lot of the labels society uses, linguistically he falls into what Japan calls otoko no musume. Literally meaning “man girl,” otoko no musume are men who make their professional appearances as women.

AN 1

Among otoko no musume, Ao-nyan is starting to stick out from the rest of the pack and catch the eye of the mainstream media. In July, photos of the model were featured on Fuji TV’s Mezamashi TV morning show, and Ao-nyan himself was a guest last month on the same channel’s afternoon talk show Viking.

▼ Ao-nyan in the dressing room before his Viking appearance.

AN 2

All of this seems to be translating into commercial success for the model, as well. Ao-nyan’s most recent photo collection disk, titled Boku to Anata to Anata Dake no Atashi (Me, You, and the Me Only You Know, with a shift from the masculine boku to the feminine atashi between the two instances of “me”) proved so popular that all copies are currently sold out, with a second printing currently being considered.

AN 3

▼ Some of the tamer photos from the collection

AN 4

AN 5

AN 6

AN 7

Ao-nyan is apparently photogenic regardless of which gender he dresses as. For a recently concluded photo exhibition in Tokyo’s Harajuku, Ao-nyan posed for pictures in both men’s and women’s clothing.

Still, the model seems most proud of his otoko no musume portfolio, regularly tweeting new pictures of full-on photo shoots or simply a girlish sock/shoe combo he’s trying out.

AN 8

After all, if you want to beat the girls at their own game, you’ve got to sweat the details.

Monthly “Propaganda” event in Tokyo is a paradise for the trans and crossdressing communities

$

2

As another one of those tricky wasei-eigo words, “new half” refers to transsexual individuals and those people who identify more with the opposite gender. A new Japanese term has also established itself within the past several years to denote the same thing–男の娘, which is pronounced as otoko no ko (the usual way to say “boys”) but written with the kanji for otoko no musume (“young women-men”; musume refers to “young ladies” as in the name of the sensational idol group Morning Musume).

Thanks in large part to the prevalence of otoko no ko in popular manga, social media sites, and video games, casual crossdressing events are enjoying a relative boom of popularity in Japan, and nowhere is this phenomenon more visible than at the monthly Propaganda event held in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Best of all, there are no strings attached–everyone is welcome, from professional drag queens to adults just looking to experiment with a different way of having fun! More details after the jump.

Propaganda has been held on the last Saturday of each month since 2007. From its humble beginnings with an average attendance of 50 people, the event has grown to accommodate almost 400 people per meeting, of which nearly 70% come crossdressed. Office ladies, Gothic Lolitas, schoolgirls…you name it, and someone is sure to be dressing as it! The only thing is, the gender lines are so blurred that you’ll probably have trouble telling the men from the real ladies.

In addition, the attendees have many different motives for dressing up; for some, dressing in clothing of the opposite gender feels the most natural for them, while others see it as a chance to fulfill their cosplay dreams in an accepting haven.

Satsuki-san, Propaganda’s current organizer, has herself undergone a sex change operation within the past year. Since then she has even won fourth place in an international transsexual tournament (we unfortunately don’t have the details of that event, but are impressed nonetheless!). When asked to describe the premise behind Propaganda, she explained, “The concept is ‘liberation’. I want to create a place of cultural exchange where people of various views can be free to wear different styles of clothing and makeup.”

Here’s an energizing promotional clip of the monthly venue, along with some other images:

▼”The day everything is decided.”

▼Even the the legendary Sailor Suit Old Man is getting in on the fun.

A new book exploring the subculture has also arrived on the scene. Nao Kawamoto, the 34-year-old author of the newly published Otoko no ko (musume)-tachi: Kare (kanojo) no life histories ["Otoko no ko: His (her) Life Histories"], had the following to say regarding the phenomenon in Japan:

“Once, the places to crossdress were very limited and people with this hobby were shunned. But now thanks to Twitter and video sites on the internet, there are better opportunities to watch and share clips of men crossdressing as women. The community is now even more exciting than ever before!”

▼Nao Kawamoto’s new book with a cleverly worded title

For those interested in checking it out, the next Propaganda event will be held this Saturday (September 27) from midnight until 5am at the Christon Cafe in Shinjuku’s Oriental Wave Building. Men pay a 3,500 yen (US$32.19) admission fee and women (including crossdressing men) pay just 3,000 yen. You must also show a photo ID to gain entrance to the event.

Here’s a flier for this Saturday which will feature musical performances galore, including the debut of a male/female crossdressing idol unit:

Japanese high school holds annual contest to decide the prettiest “girl” in school

The whole concept of an all-boys high school is kind of cruel when you think about it. You take a bunch of young men who have only recently hit puberty and are practically oozing hormones out of their pores and lock them in a prison-like environment filled with nothing but other males for the majority of their teen lives.

So it’s understandable that at least one Japanese all-boys high school, faced with an utter lack of girls to ogle, chose to get a little creative… by holding an annual beauty pageant to determine the prettiest “girl” in school.

Komaba High School in the Setagaya Ward of Tokyo has been holding the event for at least a couple of years on or around Japan’s Culture Day, when a lot of schools hold “Culture Festivals” where student clubs put on shows, host recruitment booths and generally cause a ruckus.

One such club apparently decided to start holding a beauty pageant for the guys at school, with somewhat mixed results; a couple of contestants pretty much look the part, while others look like they’re wearing cheap Halloween costumes and didn’t even have time to shave:

Somebody call mall security! Grown man dressed as little girl shows off for shoppers

Last weekend, shoppers at Q’s Mall in the Abeno district of Osaka were treated to an appearance by this (unidentified) middle-aged man dressed in the typical garb of a Japanese junior school student. Unfazed by the public gaze, he posed for pictures and smiled for shoppers who paused to take in his… unusual choice of attire.

The man appears to be modeling the traditional bright yellow hat (worn to make tiny students more visible to drivers on their walk to school), as well as the ubiquitous “randoseru” backpack in a fetching shade of fuchsia. He rounds off his ensemble with a pair of teeny-tiny gym shorts, resembling the sort worn by junior high school students during P.E (in the UK we called ‘em gym knickers). He has accessorized with a bold choice of patterned knee socks, a hot-pink belt and a little yellow body pouch.

Now, we have no idea why this fellow decided to parade in public dressed as a little girl, but he certainly seems to be enjoying the attention and the shoppers are getting a giggle out of it too, so who are we to judge? Who knows, perhaps he might join forces with other wacky dressers Sailor Suit Old Man and Ladybeard?

The photos above were uploaded by Twitter user yu_ki0615 who was on the scene. The tweet prompted a flood of responses from netizens who were both shocked and amused.

“I think… someone should notify… the police.”

“He has pretty legs. Lol.”

“Child: Mommy, why is that man wearing a junior high school uniform?
Mother: No! DON’T LOOK!”

What do you think of the man’s ensemble? Is it kawaii or is it kimoi (gross?) Or perhaps it’s a little bit kimokawa (a mixture of both?) …

“We don’t want to be girls. We just want to be cute!” The future of crossdressing in Osaka

$

Tokyo’s Onna no ko kurabu, or Girls’ Club, has a simple mission statement: it’s a place where anybody can enjoy dressing in girls’ clothing. The bar’s staff aims to help men who may be crossdressing for the first time, providing clothes to choose from as well as a dedicated make-up service.

And now, Girls’ Club is spreading the cuteness a little further, with the opening of a second store in the heart of Osaka’s entertainment district.

The new bar, which opens its doors December 1, will have a wardrobe of women’s clothing and wigs available for guests who want to try out ‘josou’ (dressing in girls’ clothing). Just like their Tokyo branch, the Osaka store is open to anyone who wants to drink with cute crossdressing bar staff.

Men trying out josou for the first time can get help with hair and make-up, and there are lockers and even a shower room for anyone wanting to keep their crossdressing a secret from those at home.

▼ The Tokyo branch of Girls’ Club

Demand for venues such as Girls’ Club comes not only from men wanting to crossdress, the owners say, but also from people who aren’t interested in wearing girls’ clothing themselves, but want to meet guys who do. Men who practice josou crossdressing do not necessarily want to change their gender, they explain: “it’s not because we want to be girls – it’s because we want to be cute!

In ten years time, Girls’ Club hopes, josou and those who practice it will no longer be stigmatised or seen as odd. “It will just be a part of fashion, not something for hobbyists or enthusiasts,” the bar’s owners say.

Girls’ Club Osaka opens December 1 at Shimoura Bldg, 2-4-14 Dōtonbori, Chuo-ku, Osaka.

“I wonder how many years it’s been since either one of them went to class…”

“How did they get in!?”

“The one on the left looks like Sophie [from Howl’s Moving Castle]. Quick, someone break the spell!”

“Dumbledore…!?”

“This, this destructive force…”

“Touché, Hamuchan [the name of the online forum], you got me again…”
