Japanese gender-bending cosplayer reveals her number one tip for perfecting any look

$

There’s more to cosplaying across genders then just dressing up in costume.

While cosplay is always a great outlet for indulging in fantasy scenarios and expressing love for well-known characters, it’s also a unique way to break down conventional walls and boundaries, with men dressing up as women, women dressing up as men, and a bit of everything in between.

Perfecting a look when cosplaying as a character with a different gender to your own isn’t always easy, but for Japanese cosplayer @18_27_Ruccika, it’s a challenge she takes on wholeheartedly.

So far, she’s accomplished a number of female looks with the greatest of ease, cosplaying as characters like Touka Kirishima, a ghoul from Tokyo Ghoul.

She’s also been known to celebrate Maid’s Day when it rolls around on 10 May every year.

While she brings a natural femininity to each of these looks, @18_27_Ruccika also knows how to bring out her more masculine side when cosplaying as some of her favourite male characters.

▼ Here she can be seen as Okita Sougo from Gintama, and Kyoya Hibari and Belphegor from Reborn!

She’s also dressed up as Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan, vocaloid Kaito, Nick Wilde from Zootopia and Isaac Foster from Satsuriku no Tenshi, or Angel of Slaughter.

One of her most interesting roles to date is the character of Midare Toushirou, an anthropomorphised short sword from the hugely popular online web browser game Touken Ranbu. Midare is a male character who looks like a girl and dresses in women’s clothing.

With so many styles and characters under her belt, @18_27_Ruccika has done a lot of experimenting with poses and has come up with some winning techniques that she now wants to share with other cosplayers.

According to @18_27_Ruccika, the number one tip to perfecting any look comes down to posture. In order to illustrate her point, she’s shared this sketch with her followers online, demonstrating the different pelvic positions for females, (on the left of each picture) compared to males (on the right).

What this means in the real world is that, if you’re a woman cosplaying as a man and you retain your usual posture, with your bottom out and chest raised, people will instantly know that you’re a woman.

Having found some side poses in her collection, she displayed them side-by-side in order to further highlight the importance of posture in cosplay. On the right, where she cosplays as the effeminate male character Midare Toushirou, you can see her chest is raised, her spine is curved, and her bottom is pushed out.

On the left, where she cosplays as vocaloid Kaito, her back is stooped, her shoulders dropped, and she’s activated her pelvis, pulling it in so that her bottom doesn’t jut out. The red exclamation points illustrate the ideal position of the pelvis according to each look.

@18_27_Ruccika always adopts this stance when dressed up as male characters like Kaito, a vocaloid originally developed by Yamaha Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., the same company behind the aqua-haired vocaloid Hatsune Miku.

It’s also the key to bringing Kyoya Hibari to life from the anime and manga series Reborn!

Fellow cosplayers have been thanking @18_27_Ruccika for her advice, saying they’ll be using the pictures as a reference when completing their own looks.

Whether you’re wanting to cosplay across genders, or simply wanting to bring a sense of authenticity to a portfolio of animated characters, perfection is always in the details, so don’t forget to add posture to your look next time you cosplay!

Our crossdressing Japanese reporters use Makeapp with dramatic results 【Photos】

The app that digitally removes makeup has some some funny, and frightening, results.

With the advent of apps in recent years, enhancing photos to make them look more beautiful is now easier than ever. Filters come standard with most smartphones these days, and while adding digital makeup can make anyone look more attractive – even family pets – now people are playing with a new app that removes makeup from photos instead.

People everywhere are having fun with the makeup-erasing option on the Makeapp app, including our japanese-language writing team. Mr Sato and Go Hattori were particularly keen to try the app on some of their favourite photos, and the results were shocking, hilarious and frightening at the same time.

First up is Mr Sato, made up as a stubbly version of the white Softbank dog for one of his intrepid news-gathering assignments.

With everything covered in makeup, except his lips and eyes, Mr Sato was curious to see what would happen when he pressed the “Remove Makeup” button on the screen.

Erm…it seems Mr Sato must’ve been born this way, as the wizardry of digital makeup removal did nothing to change his appearance.

Apart from slightly softening out the edges, which made him look even worse than he did before, there was no real change to these before-and-after images.

Thinking the no-makeup effect might work better on a more conventionally made-up face, Mr Sato reached for the feminine section of his expansive photo collection.

▼ Here he is playing up to the cameras at a photo shoot for another one of his hard-hitting investigative stories.

Mr Sato tapped the “Remove Makeup” button on Makeapp and….YIKES! The once alluring seductress instantly became the stuff of nightmares.

▼ The lady in the “after” shot belongs in a horror movie.

Another one of Mr Sato’s female characters came out looking worse for wear after the change, making him wonder if he really looked that pallid in real life.

Go was next to step up to the plate, offering up one of his most kawaii photos for the transformation.

▼ Again, the result was a horror show.

Go’s once-vibrant complexion had become sallow, and his eyes and hair had also lost their shine, making him look like more like an old woman peering out of a haunted house rather than a cute, beguiling lady.

Go was determined to try again, this time with his most adorable photo, which he hoped would leave him looking a little more vibrant in the after shot.

▼ Sorry, Go – this app refuses to be forgiving.

▼ Gorgeous Go ends up looking not-so-gorgeous.

With the app stripping away extra definition and colour during the makeup-removal process, it’s not surprising that it made our male models look like sunken-eyed, lifeless beings. Still, makeup isn’t everything; if you’re not made-up, that doesn’t mean you’re a sunken-eyed, sallow shell of a woman, even if that’s what this app clearly makes you out to be!

Bath transforms Japanese Twitter beauty’s appearance…and seemingly gender too!

Twitter user goes from girliest of girls to manliest of men in two minutes flat.

Japanese Twitter, and its Chinese equivalent Weibo, have seen more than a few photos that appear to show cutesy childlike cosplaying girls but turn out to be guys (potentially even your own teacher) with a penchant for cross-dressing. The photos are convincing enough to warrant scores of fans, and even the occasional marriage proposal. The latest one to cause a storm on Japanese twitter is slightly different.

The male stars of previous photos have been, I’d say, more than a little effeminate in appearance. Androgynous enough that in dim light, and through the altered vision of a strong pair of beer goggles, they could be mistaken for a member of the fairer sex even in their day-to-day wear. This time with Twitter user @1293Maron, wash away all the makeup with a good hot bath and what do we have left?

A man, but more than that, a somewhat grizzly manly man. While we’ll never know for sure, perhaps he was inspired by the stunning results of one of our reporter’s first steps into the world of crossdressing.

▼ With just a little bit of makeup, perfectly applied

Were the netizens of Japan outraged, lambasting those duplicitous cosplayers tugging on their fragile heartstrings? Hardly, most were impressed by his makeup skills in character, and his flawless skin out of it with guys and girls asking for makeup tips. At the time of writing there were no marriage proposals, but surely it’s only a matter of time.

▼ Allegedly convincing enough to pass a hostess club interview

Those who commented were fairly evenly split as to which of the two they found more attractive, with @1293Mason seemingly happy either way. Best of all, the post can be considered a public service announcement as @1293Mason graciously gave permission to use his images in tweets should you ever find yourself with a need to tell your followers “my girlfriend got into the bath and out came this old guy.”

The moral of the story, when even a guy with a (bit of a) beard can look like an attractive young lady, is never trust anything that looks too good to be true. Well, you can trust us here at SoraNews24; we’ll steer you right.

Japanese boy band members surprise fans by dressing up as high school girls

It’s hard to believe that these cute young schoolgirls are actually men.

With so many idol units in Japan following the tried and true formula of dancing while pulling cute poses and singing into microphones, it can sometimes be hard to get your group to stand out from the rest.

Japanese boy band 8P (8-Piece) has no problems attracting attention, though, with its eight good-looking members plucked from voice acting careers to form what’s being called a “voice acting unit”.

Now the group is making news after they decided to surprise fans by dressing up as girls at an event to mark the sale of their new CD. And the idol unit skirted into new territory in memorable fashion, by choosing to step into the role of high school girls, complete with uniforms.

Looking at the cute schoolgirl photos posted on the group’s official Twitter feed, it’s hard to believe that this is what they normally look like:

Appearing on the scene late last year, the group’s members include Yu Hatanaka, pictured below in the short bob hairstyle…

Atsushi Kosaka, who gave voice to the character Mitsuya Akuto from The New Prince of Tennis

Masuyama Takeaki, who like many members of the group, has experience in voice acting for The Idolmaster: SideM video game…

And Arthur Lounsbery, who was actually born in the States but moved to Japan when he was just 18 months oldanime. His voice acting credits include the role of Shinji Watari from the anime Haikyū!!

According to representatives for the group, the decision to crossdress was simply a fun thing to do to surprise their fans who attended the event, with photos from the day asking fans to get involved by picking their favourite “type” from the eight members.

While it looks like the group intend to appear as males for future appearances, the schoolgirls will be coming out to play again at least one more time, for a special broadcast set to be screened on their affiliate Animate Channel on 11 August.

If the idol unit really wants to send their viewer numbers into the stratosphere they might want to think about following in the steps of boy band MeseMoa., who made news earlier this year for kissing each other over and over in their music video. We can’t wait for more groups to break norms in the music idol industry!

Let men embrace their feminine side with sailor uniforms and racy bras that leave little to the imagination.

Japanese men crossdressing as women, known as otoko no ko, has seen a surge in recent years. Such individuals may seek to expand their wardrobe and include a few more charming garments for special occasions, but their options thus far have been limited.

Crossdressing male pornstar Kaoru Oshima may just have the solution, producing his own line of intimate fashion in an effort to help men bring out their inner seductress in the comfort of their own home. Arguably one of the most famous otoko no ko in Japan, he teases that his apparel is so cute it’ll make other women jealous.

Although the garments are designed specifically for men, women will find that they can fit into the L-sized versions comfortably too.

▼ Oshima modeling a hooded two-piece roomwear

▼ The maid uniform comes with matching cuffs (3,456 yen, US$31.35).

▼ Sleeveless sailor uniform (3,456 yen, US$31.35)

▼ This fluffy bra and panty set leaves
little to the imagination (3,024 yen, US$27.43).

▼ Go full temptress and mess with people’s minds with this sexy lingerie set that
includes a g-string, garter belt, and a single stocking (3,240 yen, US$29.40).

▼ The blue and white tight fitting school swimsuit
can be an eyeful (2,376 yen, US$21.55).

All outfits featured above are available online at Village Vanguard for a limited time until 30 September, and each purchase comes with an autographed photo of the crossdressing king Kaoru Oshima himself.

For those feeling inclined to slip into something a little sexier, Oshima’s line of cute room wear may just be the perfect choice. All we’d suggest is adding some makeup and manicure products designed for the modern otoko no ko too.

Men’s size women’s cardigan smashes crowdfunding goal online in Japan

There’s huge demand in Japan for cute, girly fashion specifically designed to fit male physiques.

If you’ve ever been shopping in women’s fashion stores in Japan, you’ll know that sizes tend to sit on the small side of the spectrum. Chances are, if you’re anything over a U.S. size 10, you’ll be relegated to browsing the racks at a plus-size store, and even then finding the right fit is tricky due to all the different waist-hip-bust ratio measurements.

While this can make shopping a frustrating experience for women who don’t fit the cookie-cutter mould of the ideal body type, spare a thought for men looking to wear women’s clothing in Japan. Though genderless fashion trends are currently on the rise, what happens when a man is specifically looking to dress in girly, conservative clothing?

That’s where Japanese fashion brand blurorange has stepped in. Catering to a gap in the market for men’s sized ladies’ wear, the company is now working on mass producing a cardigan – through crowdfunding site Makuake – specifically “for men who want to wear cute clothes“.

The cardigan has been carefully designed to create a girly look which isn’t too over-the-top, with frilled details around the bottom and on the sleeves. According to blurorange, the garment is incredibly versatile, making it a perfect addition to a variety of outfits.

While a lot of thought went into the details, the fit was one of the most important elements in creating the perfect cardigan for the male physique. In the photo below, a 183-centimetre (6-foot) tall male model demonstrates how a regular women’s cardigan, on the right, is tight-fitting, impossible to button up, and too short on the sleeves.

On the left, the blurorange cardigan fits his frame perfectly, with lots of room for movement and sleeves that extend to cover the back of the hand in a cute girly way.

As well as working hard to create the perfect look and fit, blurorange also wanted to ensure the garment felt beautiful, so they used 100-percent high-quality Australian extra-fine Merino wool to create a soft, elegant feel.

Of course, women are also free to wear the garment, which can be seen modelled on a 161-centimetre tall female below.

Made in Japan by an Osaka-based knitting company founded in 1919, the attention to detail in the high-quality garment is reflected in the price. Reward tiers range from 16,500 yen (US$146.43) for a single cardigan in white or pink, which includes a 15-percent discount off the retail price, up to 46,500 yen for a set which includes a cardigan and a one-piece dress in either pink or blue.

This one-piece has also been designed to fit the male form, with an easy-to-use back zip specially designed by esteemed zipper company YKK. The zip is longer than those usually found on women’s dresses, making it easier to reach around to get in and out of the garment.

Demand for the new products has been high, with blurorange smashing its 300,000-yen funding goal by 117 percent with 24 days still remaining in the campaign. To make a purchase, head over to their crowdfunding page here, and if you’d like to check out some of Japan’s other ladies’ designs for men, why not add some cute sailor suit loungewear to your wardrobe?

Friend’s reaction to high school boy’s penchant for crossdressing is both unexpected and cute

$

What if you discovered your friend had an adorable alter ego?

Some Japanese high school boys have the uncanny ability to turn into charming girls with a bat of an eyelid.

Japanese Twitter user @Elmon_0715 is one such crossdresser gifted with androgynous looks, and his hobby has made some of his women followers green with envy.

▼ This 17-year old high school student just loves taking selfies.

▼ His parents might not know about his
crossdressing antics, but the Internet does!

Dressing up as the opposite sex is no doubt a growing trend, but it’s one thing to read about it and yet another to find out by accident that your buddy’s into the hobby.

Vast as the Internet may be, it still didn’t take long before a friend stumbled across @Elmon_0715’s Twitter page. Bewildered, he confronted him over LINE, a popular messaging app in Japan.

▼ The conversation unfolded quickly, with @Elmon_0715 on the right
and his friend on the left. (Translation below)

“Hey.”
*Uploads image*
“That’s you right?”

“Huh? What’s this all of a sudden?”

“I mean if you look at the room, that’s your home.”
“Are you serious?”

“I’m sorry.”
“You find it revolting?”

“I’ll be honest.”

“Okay, what is it?”

“If you go out with me, I’ll keep my mouth shut.”

“What?”

The Internet’s gaze swung toward @Elmon_0715 with just that one tweet, propelling his followers from 4,000 to over 47,000 in the space of a few days. A follower even went as far as drawing a comic depicting the LINE exchange.

▼ So when is this going to serialize?

@Elmon_0715 has not revealed the actual outcome of the exchange thus far, and netizens were thoroughly amused:

“This story has suddenly taken an interesting turn.”
“I think he’s testing the waters.”
“What’s this? It’s like a story straight out of porn. I wish you two happiness.”
“My stomach’s hurting from all the laughing. Stop it!”
“Woah woah slow down! Do not go down the forbidden path.”

Will love blossom, or will the friend’s not-so-subtle advances fail to bear fruit? We may never know. But what we do know is that this incident is by no means the first of its kind, as a student apparently also accidentally caught his male teacher cosplaying as characters of the opposite sex.

Crossdressing Japanese teen’s outing inspires boys’ love style fan manga

$

English-language short comic attracts the attention of the real-life teen who inspired it.

Earlier this month, life seemed to be imitating anime as Japanese Twitter user @Elmon_0715’s penchant for crossdressing was discovered by one of his friends when he posted a picture of himself done up as a cute girl. In the exchange of messages that followed, the friend said he’d keep the teen’s secret…provided he’d agree to go out with him.

It’s unclear how serious the proposal was, but if taken at face value it dovetails with the rest of the details in seeming like it could easily be the premise of a manga or anime in the boys’ love genre. As a matter of fact, the whole thing sounded so much like a boys’ love series that artist and Twitter user @Thebakex2 went ahead and drew up a cover illustration for a fictional dojinshi, or independently-produced Japanese comic, with the title There’s No Way My Friend Can Be This Cute! (a joking reference to actual anime series My Little Sister Can’t Be This Cute).

But even though he tweeted the cover with the declaration that he wouldn’t actually be drawing a comic, the very next day @Thebakex2 did a 180 and drew the first page of his story, which picks up right after the real-life date request and treats it as an earnest overture, and one that gets the crossdressing teen both excited and flustered over choosing what to wear for the outing.

@Thebakex2 doesn’t seem to be a native speaker of English or Japanese, but he posted the first page of the comic in both languages. The page ends with “to be continue (?)”, but just as with his initial reluctance to draw anything more than the cover, @Thebakex2 once again changed his mind and drew another page, where the crossdressing teen’s attire once again produces a very different reaction from his friend than he’d initially expected.

The second page, despite being in English, was accompanied by a slightly garbled Japanese message from @Thebakex2, saying, roughly, “As promised, here’s the final page. Thanks for reading!” However, @Thebakex2 ended up getting plenty of thanks himself for the comic, including a message from the crossdresser who inspired it all.

▼ @Elmon_0715: “Thank you for going to all the trouble to draw these!”

So who knows, maybe that gratitude from @Elmon_0715 will inspire @Thebakex2 to once again keep the comic going longer than he’d originally intended.

Japanese beauty magazine asks readers to identify the one crossdresser among 12 beautiful women

An interesting campaign that shows off the power of their products.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned, it’s that some guys look fantastic as members of the opposite sex. Amazing makeup skills or androgynous features help achieve the effect, but sometimes our instincts kick in to remind us that the woman we’re looking at is more than what she seems.

Japanese beauty magazine Kai Beauty Press recently decided to put readers to the test in identifying a single male dolled up with the power of makeup among 11 other women. Pick the correct person and you’ll stand a chance to win a prize!

▼ The crossdresser in question is model and actor Tom Fujita.

Instagram Photo

Now I’m no wizard at makeup and beauty, but I figured being able to spot Tom would be as easy as pie. How hard can it be, right?

▼ Or so I thought.
Which number do you think he is?

Kai Beauty Press did throw in three hints that might make the search easier: a powder brush, an electric eyebrow trimmer, and a heated eyelash curler were used.

The prize for correctly identifying Tom is a 42-piece Kai beauty care kit, awarded to 100 lucky winners. Just follow Kai Beauty Press on Twitter and tweet your answer to be eligible for the draw.

The campaign lasts until 14 February, so put on your thinking caps and see if you can find Tom Fujita! Failing that, you can always try the nifty tried-and-tested app to remove all that makeup.

Our male reporter transforms into a beautiful Japanese courtesan at Tokyo photo studio

01

If you want to become a geisha, maiko, samurai or courtesan, gender is no barrier at this Asakusa photo studio.

It wasn’t long ago we told you about Nanairo, the photo studio in Asakusa that did an incredible job of turning our very own Mr. Sato into a sword-wielding samurai warrior. The transformation was so impressive that it wasn’t long before another of our reporters, Nakazawa, revealed his dream for an Edo-style makeover. Only this time he wanted to shed his geeky male persona and feel beautiful for a change so he opted to dress like a sexy oiran courtesan.

▼ Nakazawa stands in front of Studio Nanairo before the transformation.

2

While the male courtesan packages are not part of their usual plans, the experience can be specially arranged by prior appointment. Once you arrive on the day, you’ll spend some time in the hair and makeup chair before being dressed in a glamorous kimono and haori (traditional kimono coat), followed by a thirty-minute photo shoot in a beautiful space designed to look like a room in the pleasure quarters.

▼ The result

3

▼ Goodbye Nakazawa, hello sexy courtesan!

4

Before the photo shoot began, the studio staff asked for some directives. Our reporter said he wanted to feel beautiful. Sexy images would be good, exposed skin shots were okay, and he’d like a stunning, over-the-top look.

▼ He got everything he asked for.

8

▼ There are also a number of gorgeous props to help you get into character, like long pipes which were commonly used by courtesans back in the day…

5

▼ …adorable fox masks…

6

▼ …lacy, gold-flecked fans…

13

▼ …and traditional Japanese umbrellas. You can add a smile too if you like, but Nakazawa preferred to channel a more stern seductress.

14

▼ It’s hard to imagine that underneath the courtesan’s clothes and makeup lies this less glamorous yet equally loveable character!

7

▼ We have seen this pose in the office, although it’s decidedly less alluring when he’s wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

9

Nakazawa was blown away by the experience and the photos he received at the end. He said he couldn’t even recognise himself and felt like an absolute princess with the team of professional staff fussing over him.

12

He’d never worn false eyelashes before and he loved the effect it had, elongating and opening up his eyes. He was also surprised by the tightness of the obi sash and the heaviness of the elaborate kimono and haori. It’s not easy work being a sought-after courtesan!

15

The whole experience took about 3 hours and cost a total of 25,000 yen (US$204), which included 24 photos from the day. The staff was excellent, guiding Nakazawa through the process from beginning to end so efficiently that the time flew by without him even noticing.

17

There are a variety of packages to choose from, so if you’re interested in transporting yourself to a different era of Japan, be sure to check out their website for more details.
